Roxana Marcoci Promoted to Senior Curator in MoMA’s Department of Photography

Glenn D. Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art, announces that Roxana Marcoci has been promoted to Senior Curator in MoMA’s Department of Photography.  Ms. Marcoci joined the Museum in 1999 as the Janice H. Levin Fellow/Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture, subsequently joining the Department of Photography in 2003 as Assistant Curator, and being promoted to Associate Curator in 2005, and to Curator in 2007. She currently also chairs the Museum’s Modern Women’s Fund Committee, and the Central and Eastern European group, part of the Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) in a Global Age.

“This promotion recognizes Roxana Marcoci’s exceptional merit and her unique contribution to MoMA,” said Mr. Lowry. “In her 14 years at the Museum, she has not only organized groundbreaking exhibitions, but also has played a significant role in highlighting and redefining the influential role of photography in contemporary art.”

At MoMA, Ms. Marcoci has organized major exhibitions, often accompanied by extensive publications: The Shaping of New Visions: Photography, Film, Photobook (2012); the retrospective Sanja Iveković: Sweet Violence (2011); The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today (2010), which received the Outstanding Catalogue based on an Exhibition award from The Association of Art Museum Curators; the retrospective Take your time: Olafur Eliasson (with Klaus Biesenbach, 2008); Comic Abstraction: Image-Breaking, Image-Making (2007); and the retrospective Thomas Demand (2005).

Other recent exhibitions that she organized at MoMA include: Taryn Simon: A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I-XVIII (2012); Staging Action: Performance in Photography Since 1960 (with Eva Respini, 2011); Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography (with Sarah Meister and Eva Respini, 2010); and Jan De Cock: Denkmal 11 (2008). Ms. Marcoci has organized numerous other shows within the New Photography series, most recently New Photography 2013: Adam Bromberg and Oliver Chanarin, Brendan Fowler, Annette Kelm, Lisa Oppenheim, Anna Ostoya, Josephine Pryde, Eileen Quinlan (through January 6, 2014), and within the Projects series. She recently organized Ansel Adams: The Politics of Contemplation (2013) for MoMA PS1’s exhibition EXPO 1: New York, and is currently working on the retrospective exhibition Christopher Williams: The Production Line of Happiness (2014). 

Roxana Marcoci holds a PhD in Art History, Theory and Criticism from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. In 2011, she completed a fellowship at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. She is currently visiting professor in the graduate program at Yale University School of Arts.
