Sigmar Polke: Films 1969–1995
In conjunction with the gallery exhibition Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963–2010, MoMA presents a pair of evenings that allow visitors to see Polke’s film works in a theater setting. Polke’s densely layered and open-ended films reflect the flood of observations that shaped his life and work. Each evening will feature a special introduction by a filmmaker whose personal and collaborative experiences with Polke provide unique insights into the artist’s multifaceted approaches to film. On April 10, Georg Polke, the artist’s son, will present a selection from over two decades worth of material by Sigmar Polke that has never before been publicly screened, spanning the artist’s practice in the studio, his daily life, and his travels around Oceania. On April 19, Christof Kohlhöfer will introduce The Whole Body Feels Light and Wants to Fly…, a seminal film he made together with Polke in 1969. This work will be screened along with a selection of Polke’s films in which the only clear narratives are of a life lived with great gusto and invention.
The exhibition is organized by MoMA with Tate Modern, London. Organized by Kathy Halbreich, Associate Director, MoMA; with Mark Godfrey, Curator of International Art, Tate Modern; and Lanka Tattersall, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Painting and Sculpture, MoMA.
The exhibition is made possible by a partnership with
