Party in the Garden 2018

Posted on March 27, 2018

The Museum of Modern Art’s Party in the Garden will honor philanthropist Agnes Gund on May 31, celebrating her contributions as art patron, collector, and longtime trustee of The Museum of Modern Art. Ms. Gund has been involved with the Museum for more than 50 years, after joining MoMA’s International Council in 1967. In 1976, she joined the Museum’s Board of Trustees and served as president from 1991 until 2002. Since 2002, she has served as president emerita and currently sits as chairman of the Board of Directors for MoMA PS1. Ms. Gund has given hundreds of works of art to the Museum and has supported countless exhibitions and programs over the past half century. Ms. Gund’s dedication and generous philanthropy to the arts community also extends beyond the Museum to other organizations such as Studio in a School, the Cleveland Museum of Art, National YoungArts Foundation, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, and the Art for Justice Fund, to name only a few. Party in the Garden is made possible by Carolina Herrera.

Prior to Party in the Garden, on April 29, MoMA will open the exhibition Studio Visit: Selected Gifts from Agnes Gund. The exhibition will reflect the depth of her collecting by bringing together a broad-ranging group of about 40 artworks from the 1950s to today in a non-chronological display that sets visitor favorites, lesser-known works, and recent acquisitions in dialogue with one another. While presenting only a fraction of the works Gund has given to MoMA, the presentation aims to prove that our collection would not be what it is today without her deeply held convictions and unparalleled generosity. The exhibition is organized by Ann Temkin, The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator, and Cara Manes, Assistant Curator, with Mia Matthias, Curatorial Fellow, Department of Painting and Sculpture.

Party in the Garden benefits MoMA’s Annual Fund and the maintenance of The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. The event also supports the Museum’s general operating fund, helping to make possible the Museum’s education programs and the care, study, and maintenance of its collection.
