The Craft: Casting Directors Ellen Lewis and Laura Rosenthal

June 01, 2023 – June 16, 2023

The Museum of Modern Art

This latest edition of MoMA’s series The Craft celebrates a pair of legendary film and television casting directors, Ellen Lewis and Laura Rosenthal, who will usher in a two-week sampling of their award-winning work with an onstage conversation on June 1 introduced by their mentor, the great Juliet Taylor. Ellen Lewis has collaborated with Martin Scorsese for 34 years and counting (from Goodfellas to his forthcoming Killers of the Flower Moon) and with Jim Jarmusch for 28 years (beginning with Dead Man); and she has also cast films by Mike Nichols, Steven Spielberg, and Penny Marshall, among many others. Laura Rosenthal has worked with Todd Haynes for over two decades—from Far from Heaven to his latest film, May December—and she has longtime casting relationships with Lisa Chodolenko, Paolo Sorrentino, Oren Moverman, Joachim Trier, Nora Ephron, and Jim Jarmusch, to name just a few.

Organized by Joshua Siegel, Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art.

Film at MoMA is made possible by CHANEL.

Additional support is provided by the Annual Film Fund. Leadership support for the Annual Film Fund is provided by Debra and Leon D. Black, with major contributions from The Contemporary Arts Council of The Museum of Modern Art, Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder, the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP), The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art, and Karen and Gary Winnick.
