New Directors/New Films 2020

December 09, 2020 – December 20, 2020

Film at Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art announce the return of the 49th annual New Directors/New Films (ND/NF), rescheduled from March for December 9-20. Throughout its rich, nearly half-century history, the festival has celebrated filmmakers who represent the present and anticipate the future of cinema, and whose daring work pushes the envelope in unexpected ways. This year’s festival will introduce 24 features and 10 shorts virtually to audiences nationwide, with films scheduled over the course of 12 days and screening exclusively in the FLC Virtual Cinema.

The list of directors who have shown films at New Directors/New Films over the last near half-century includes such artists as Pedro Almodóvar, Chantal Akerman, Andrea Arnold, Luca Guadagnino, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Kirsten Johnson, Terence Nance, Christopher Nolan, Laura Poitras, Spike Lee, Sarah Polley, Kelly Reichardt, Guillermo del Toro, Joachim Trier, and Denis Villeneuve. Any of the filmmakers in this year’s lineup have the potential to be as important to the art of cinema as these. Join us in celebrating the continued vitality and promise of the medium.

The 2020 feature committee is comprised of La Frances Hui (Co-Chair, MoMA), Dennis Lim (Co-Chair, Film at Lincoln Center), Florence Almozini (Film at Lincoln Center), Sophie Cavoulacos (MoMA), Rajendra Roy (MoMA) and Dan Sullivan (Film at Lincoln Center), and the shorts are programmed by Brittany Shaw (MoMA) and Tyler Wilson (Film at Lincoln Center).
