Sarah Michelson: nowhere

The Museum of Modern Art announces Sarah Michelson: nowhere, an exhibition featuring a commissioned performance by the acclaimed dancer and choreographer. On view September 15 through October 11, 2026, the exhibition will integrate Michelson’s dancing, thinking, and being into the routine operations of the Museum, with the artist performing during regular Museum hours alongside a rotating cast of dancers in MoMA’s Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium.

Across a career spanning nearly 30 years, Michelson has developed a rigorous, rogue body of work inspired by dance history and her tireless pursuit to, in her words, “get to the bottom of ‘What is dance?’” Known for her meticulous choreography, she often works with dancers from a wide range of technical backgrounds to explore how performers absorb the conventions of dance into their own bodies.

Organized by Ana Janevski, Curator, and Martha Joseph, Associate Curator, with Sibia Sarangan, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Media and Performance. The performances are produced by Kate Scherer, Senior Manager and Producer, with Olivia Rousey, Manager, Performance and Live Art.
